Pregnancy FAQ

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Chiropractors are trained in the care of pregnant women, and there are no contraindications for receiving chiropractic care while pregnant. In fact, at Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, we understand that chiropractic care helps to alleviate pain related to pregnancy while also preparing the body for a less stressful delivery.  Our adjustable tables provide comfort for changing bodies, and we apply specialized techniques that won’t put pressure on the abdomen. All of our patients can expect care that is safe and appropriate for their condition.

Are there chiropractic treatments that can specifically help with pregnancy?

Chiropractic care offers many benefits to the expectant mother. Some of the physical changes a woman’s body undergoes during pregnancy can put pressure on the spine and pelvic joints. Misalignment of the pelvis is common as pelvic joints loosen up in preparation for childbirth. Pelvic misalignment can impede the baby from entering the correct position for delivery—a condition known as intrauterine constraint. A chiropractic adjustment known as the Webster Technique can help maintain proper alignment of the pelvis and spine and may help prevent the need for Caesarian delivery due to intrauterine constraint. Other benefits of seeing our chiropractor during pregnancy include:

  • Fewer breech births
  • Improved labor outcomes, including reduced time in labor and delivery
  • Less nausea
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Reduced back and neck pain
  • Relief of muscle and joint pain

How far into pregnancy can I receive chiropractic treatment?

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends receiving care throughout the entire pregnancy. Treatments received as the due date arrives can focus on establishing pelvic balance and avoiding posterior and breech presentations. Our doctor can also provide a list of safe and effective exercises to help keep the body in the best possible condition for delivery.

Should I ask my OB doctor about chiropractic care?

As more women understand the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy, more physicians are learning about its benefits. It’s best to discuss all healthcare decisions with your primary physician during pregnancy. If he or she isn’t familiar with the benefits of seeing a chiropractor, ask them to learn more. It’s important to surround yourself with a healthcare team that supports and is respectful of your choices, especially during pregnancy.

What about massage during pregnancy?

The greatest benefit of prenatal massage may be the drug-free pain relief regular massage can offer. Swedish massage is highly recommended because this style of massage typically uses lighter pressure to relax tense muscles. Prenatal massage is safe, comfortable and it may decrease the body’s output of stress hormones while increasing the release of “feel-good” hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. Higher levels of dopamine and serotonin are associated with more positive labor and birth outcomes. Our doctor may suggest you include massage, physical therapy, home exercises, nutritional counseling and other wellness services as part of your wellness plan during pregnancy.
